"It took you long enough to call me back, heifer!" Jess snapped. "I was worried sick about you."

I cringed, not surprised that she was pissed. I would be, too, if the shoe were on the other foot.

"I'm super sorry about that, hon. I didn't mean to worry you. Things just...got kind of crazy." I traced the brand insignia in the middle of my steering wheel with my index finger. I always caught myself fidgeting when I felt like I was in trouble.

"Like crazy how? Cops crazy? Reality TV housewives crazy? Walk of shame crazy?" She had that "I'm your best friend and you owe me an explanation" tone going on, and I didn't dare disappoint her.

Unfortunately, I also had no idea how to bring her up to speed without possibly getting checked into an inpatient mental healthcare facility in the process.

"Definitely not the walk of shame one," I reassured her. "More like a Twilight Zone kind of crazy, to tell you the truth." Or what little truth I could share, anyway.

I took a deep breath, oddly comforted by my car's scent—a weird mixture of hand sanitizer and stale fries. I chose to spend my break in my car because I figured privacy was best at a time like this. If any of other the other nurses overheard this conversation—even just a causal mention of breaking into my ex-boyfriend’s house and nothing about shifters or witches or demons—I’d probably still get thrown into the psych ward. Because normal people didn’t do that. When did I turn into a crazy ex-girlfriend?

"Oh, really?" A clear picture of Jess scowling her disbelief formed in the back of my mind. "If it didn't get walk-of-shame crazy, then why was your phone at his address until it was time for you to leave for work today?"

“Why are you tracking my phone? Never mind. It's definitely not what you think. Marcus came home not long after I hung up with you."

"Oh, shit! He caught you? What'd he say? More importantly, what’d he do?"

I paused a moment, drumming the fingers of my free hand against the steering wheel. How could I explain it without sounding like a total lunatic? "He was kind of too injured to be overly concerned with me being there, to tell you the truth. He had a pretty nasty bite on his...hip and he passed out when I was cleaning it up with rubbing alcohol."

I reached for the bottle of water in the center console and unscrewed the cap to take a sip.

"Wait...what kind of bite do you mean?" She quizzed. “Like a things-got-out -of-hand-while-he-was-being-kinky bite, or a different kind of bite?”

I choked on the water, coughing and sputtering for dear life. Finally, after several painful deep breaths, I was able to rasp out an answer. "Looked like a dog bite to me. It was pretty mangled."

"So, Karma actually did her job and bit him in the ass for breaking your heart? Good."

Her fiercely protective satisfaction at the situation had me giggling. "I guess you could say that, yeah.
